PFM SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB & HOME CARE
Our Founders, Bishop Delford Davis and First Lady Reverend Petrova Davis got the vision for this arm of the Ministry which was well received. On March 10, 1994 this vision became a reality and the PFM Senior Citizens’ Club was born under the leadership of Elder Howard Grandison and (then Christian Worker, now Missionary) Ionie Gassop, along with fifty (50) Senior Citizens and ten (10) volunteers.
The Senior Citizens’ Club became a beacon in the Ministry and the island overall and as such new entities were added:-
˜ A soup kitchen to feed the shut-ins.
˜ Outreach programmes.
˜ Drama club.
˜ The Golden Voices Choir under the direction of Sis. Sharon Patrick and Missionary Paula Taylor. The present directors are Worker Marva McLeod and Missionary Paula Taylor. They are and have been doing a tremendous job and the Choir is always in demand to minister at different functions and activities across the island. Their most recent island wide performance was at the funeral service of the late Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer.
The achievements and activities of the Club include:-
˜ Receiving 15 Certificates of Excellence for Art & Craft competition.
˜ A visit to Curphy Home for ex-soldiers in Manchester.
˜ A one-week trip to Disney World.
˜ Three days retreat in Ocho Rios.
˜ A tour of the Norman Manley International Airport and Air Jamaica aircraft.
˜ Participated in Senior Citizens’ cultural day.
˜ Treated the PFM Basic School to a fun day.
˜ Prayer Breakfast at the Hilton Hotel.
˜ Seniors Sports Day, drama club, exercise class, Bible quiz competition.
˜ Volunteers award banquet at the Jamaica Conference Centre.
˜ Tour of the Logos Book ship.
˜ Prayer meetings, home visits and treats for the shut-ins.
˜ Concert and treat at Stony Hill Boys’ Home and Best Care Lodge Children’s’ Home.
The soup kitchen commenced on February 20, 1999 with 16 shut-in members namely:-
Sis. Jones - Sis. Rhoden - Sis. Doyle - Sis. Williams - Sis. Thompson - Mother Atkins (deceased) - Sis. Graham - Bro. Robinson - Sis. Brown (deceased) - Sis. P. Hyatt (deceased) - Sis. Anderson (deceased) - Sis. Hutchinson (deceased) - Sis. Collins (deceased) - Sis. Sinclair (deceased)
Meals were served twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 12 noon. This included a hot bowl of chicken or fish soup along with a fruit package; however due to lack of financing, the fruit package was no longer included.
The Club started out with a group of 12 volunteers and 2 main distributors, mainly Deacons Leachman and Johnson. Meal preparation commenced at 7:30 a.m., and ended at 11:30 a.m. A total of 40 members were served in the communities of Waterford, Portsmouth, Passagefort, Portmore Lane, Gregory Park, Southborough, Edgewater and Independence City. On Tuesdays, Deacon Johnson provided transportation and on Saturdays, Deacon L Leachman distributed lunches along with volunteers Sis. E. O’Hara, Sis. G. Simpson and Sis. C. Watt.
Special commendation is given to Missionary B. Bowen, a dedicated and committed member who travels all the way from Eltham Park, Spanish Town, never missing a day. Sis. M. Gooden should be commended as she donated a pig to the Senior Citizens’ Club. The soup kitchen was funded by volunteers, friends and kind sponsors.
The PFM Senior Citizens’ Club have exceeded its boundaries with over 85 members and 35 volunteers and still growing. Our goal is to touch each and every Senior Citizen in the communities and beyond, spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally.
